Brevard Runs Past Hawks

Chowan falls to 0-3 on the season

Box Score BREVARD, NC - Brevard amassed 375 yards of rushing offense to run past the Hawks this afternoon with a final score of 27-24. The Tornados gained 380 yards of total offense and stuck with their ground attack in the victory while also getting nine sacks on the defensive side of the ball. Chowan gained 345 yards of offense including a season-high 82 rushing yards. 

Brevard got on the board first when Nick Bryce rushed one in from five yards out at the 5:42 mark of the first quarter With a 7-0 over Chowan, the Hawks marched down field, capping off a 66 yard drive with a CJ Westler touchdown pass to Robert Holland from 14 yards out. Cory Cline missed the point after attempt but connected on a 22 yard field goal at the 7:04 mark of the second quarter to gain a 9-7 advantage over Brevard. Six minutes later Brevard's Bryce rushed another one ifrom five yards out  to get back on top of Chowan 14-9. 

Chowan took a 17-14 lead into halftime after Westler hit Kevin Hodrick on a 29 yard pass with time running out in the first half. Two third quarter scores by Brevard were too much for Chowan to overcome despite another Westler-Holland connection at the 9:49 mark of the fourth quarter. The Hawks were forced to punt on their next two possessions and lost the game with a final score of 27-24. 

Brian Davis led Chowan's ground attack with a career-high 66 yards on 12 carries. Westler completed 16 passes in the loss for 263 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with freshman wide receiver Robert Holland for 169 of those yards. Holland hauled in eight Westler passes and two touchdowns to go with his 169 yards. 

Jeremy Bednardz-Gray led Chowan's defensive effort with 13.5 tackles, 13 of which were solo. Greg Palmer had 12.5 tackles with two tackles for a loss off five yards, and one fumble recovery. 

Chowan falls to 0-3 on the season. They will continue with their road stand with a road game in Rocky Mount for the 12th Annual Down East Viking Classic on September 19th. Kick off is slated against Elizabeth City State at 4:00pm at the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex. Brevard remains undefeated at 3-0 after their win today.
