MURFREESBORO - The women's soccer team picked up their first win of 2009 after beating Coker College this afternoon with a final score of 2-1. Meredith McCarthy and Ashley Bradford scored second half goals for the Hawks to propel them to the victory.
After a 0-0 halftime score, Meredith McCarthy busted open the tie when she took a cross from Katie Duncan and sent it by Coker's keeper in the 57th minute. The Hawks lead lasted just about 13 minutes before Coker got on the board to knot the match at 1-1. Coker's Sara Kinsey snuck a ball by an outstretched Kristy Brown at the top of the box for her team's first and only score.
Ashley Bradford score the game-winning goal in the 83rd when Erin Jackson dribbled up from midfield and crossed a ball to the top of the box. Bradford received the ball and dribbled quickly by a Coker defender and sent to far post for the 2-1 lead and eventual win.
The Hawks out shot the Cobras 20 to the 12 in the match with Bradford getting off eight shots to lead the team. Kristy Brown gave up a goal and had six saves for Chowan.
The Hawks, now 1-1, will host Methodist College on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00pm in their next outing.
