RICHMOND - Chowan's Ransheeda Jennings hit a game-tying free throw and a game-winning lay-up over the final :32 of play to help propel her team to a 52-50 win over CIAA opponent, Virginia Union University tonight. Jennings, who leads the team in scoring through eight games, was held to five points in the game. But she made her five points count tonight with three of them helping the Hawks to their third win of the season.
Nine different Hawks scored in the game but none of them garnered double digits. The Hawks trailed by six points at the half and the two teams battled over the remainder of the second half. VUU's Tonaye Smith gave her team a 50-49 lead with :37 to play in the game before Jennings hit 1-2 from the foul line on the Hawks next trip down the court. With the game tied at 50-50, the Hawks defense went to work on the Lady Panthers, forcing a turnover. Jennings came up with the steal and hit a lay up with :12 on the clock to take a 52-50 lead and eventual win.
Chowan shot 33% from the field (20-60) and grabbed a season-high 21 offensive rebounds. Richmond native
Taylor Hughes hit a team-high 9 points on a 3-5 three point shooting night while
Najah Harris had 8 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
The Hawks will take off for the remainder of final exams before hitting the court one week from tonight with a road trip to Virginia State University.
