MURFREESBORO - #22 Johnson C. Smith used 17 made free throws to help propel them to a 55-47 win over Chowan in women's CIAA West Division action this afternoon. The Hawks out rebounded and out shot the Lady Golden Bulls percentage wise but 17 made free throws and 21 points off of Chowan turnovers gave Johnson C. Smith their 7th win of the season.
The Hawks battled with the Lady Golden Bulls for most of the game. Around the 7:00 mark of the second period, JCSU held a five point, 45-40 lead over Chowan. After converting a CU turnover into a basket, the Lady Golden Bulls ran their lead to as many 10 point with 2:53 mark. The Hawks stayed close over the final minutes but were forced to foul. JCSU made good on their free shots in the game and took the eventual 55-47 win.
Talaya Lynch led the team with 10 points and eight rebounds while teammate Ransheeda Jennings chipped in nine points. For the Lady Golden Bulls Shakira Clark came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points.
Chowan hit 43% from the floor (20-47) in the game and out rebounded Johnson C. Smith University 39-36. The Lady Golden Bulls hit 18-55 from the floor ini the game and had ten different players score.
The Hawks will travel to Virginia Union University on Wednesday in their next outing while Johnson C. Smith will hit the road for a December 12th game at Bluefield State.
