MURFREESBORO - The women's basketball team blew by Virginia Union with an 80-50 final for their first ever CIAA victory tonight. The Hawks posted a season-high points total with the 80 they dropped on the Lady Panthers. Chowan converted 28 points off of 22 Virginia Union turnovers while also hitting 7-14 from three point land.
Chowan took control of the game early and never lost their lead. Chowan got help from the foul line as they hit 23-32 in the game while also grabbing 16 offensive boards. The Hawks hit shots at a 47% clip in tonight's win, a season high to go with their season high total points and made three pointers.
The Lady Panthers hit 44% (17-39) from the floor including Tonaye Smith's game-high 27 points. She scored over half of her team's points on a 9-17 shooting performance and nine made free throws. The turnover bug bit Virginia Union as they tallied 22 total turnovers while Chowan made a season-low 13.
For the Hawks Ransheeda Jennings posted 16 points, dished out three assists, and had three steals.
Brittany Nicholson came off the bench to spark Chowan with 15 points while
Najah Harris dropped 14 points and had six assists.
Naomi Walters also scored in double-figures for the fifth straight game with 11 points and five boards.
The Hawks improve to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA while Virginia Union falls to 1-4 on the year and 0-4 in league play.
Chowan is set to tip it up with UNC-Pembroke on Wednesday on the road. Game time is set for 6:00pm. These two teams will meet again on December 9th as the Hawks will made the trip to Richmond for a 5:30pm tip off.
