Hawks Use Balanced Attack to Down Golden Bulls

Chowan picks up Homecoming Win over Johnson C. Smith

Box Score MURFREESBORO - Chowan used a balanced offensive attack and a solid defensive effort to down Johnson C. Smith University 33-22 in CIAA Western Division action at Garrison Stadium tonight. Tonight's victory is the third CIAA for the Hawks since they first came into the league last year. Chowan improves to 2-4 in the Western Division with the win. 

The Hawks pounded out 157 rushing yards in the game while also passing for 280 yards. The Hawks defense held the Golden Bulls to 337 yards on 58 total plays in the game. JJ Spates rushed for 81 yards and a score to lead the Hawks' ground attack. CJ Westler continued to throw the ball well hitting 22 of 42 total passes for 280 yards. 

Chowan took a 20-7 lead into halftime after scoring three first half touchdowns. Westler connected with Josh Barrett for a 43 yard score at the 5:04 mark of the first quarter. With Cory Cline making good on the extra point the Hawks had a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. They went on to score two more touchdowns in just :30 seconds around the 4:30 mark of the second quarter to take a 20-7 lead. 

Cline nailed two second half field goals, both from 31 yards, and Spates scored on a one yard run to take the win 33-22. 

Kevin Hodrick caught eight passes for 123 yards to lead all receivers. On the Golden Bull side of the ball Jeremy Franklin caught eight passes for 122 yards. 

Jeremy Bednardz-Gray led the defense with nine tackles including a sack. Greg Palmer had two sacks and 5.5 tackles in the game. 

The Hawks improve their overall record to 2-7 overall and 2-4 in the CIAA. Johnson C. Smith moves to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the CIAA.

The Hawks will round out the 2009 season at home at 12:30pm next Saturday. They will host Saint Augustine's College in the annual Hall of Fame game.
