Box Score MURFREESBORO - The Shaw University Bears amassed 453 yards of offense and used Chowan miscues to beat the Hawks at home with a final score of 53-20. The Hawks gained 414 yards of offense but were unable to stop the Bears' balanced attack and defensive prowess.
Julius Gregory caught a 37 yard pass from Travis Robinson at the 6:07 mark of the first quarter to get on the board first for Shaw, Gregory's catched capped off a six play, seventy-nine yard drive. Caleb Reid's point after kick gave the Bears a 7-0 lead.
Cory Cline drilled a 37 yard field goal to get Chowan on the board first with just under two minutes to play in the first quarter. With a 7-3 Shaw lead, Cline made good on another 37 yard field goal to cut the Bears lead to 7-6 with 7:54 to play in the game.
Quintez Smith returned a fumbled Chowan ball for 37 yards and another Bears score to take a 13-6 lead (Reid kick failed) on the Hawks next possession. Brandon Landers punched one in from one yard out with time running out in the second quarter to give Shaw a 20-6 lead at the half.
The Bears went on to score 33 second half points to take the 53-20 win.
CJ Westler connected with
Kevin Hodrick on two scores in the third and fourth quarters respectively. Westler broke the single season passing record tonight after throwing for 361 total yards. He connected with
Robert Holland 18 times (a new single game record for receptions) for a total of 221 yards. Holland broke three records tonight himself as a freshman receiver for receptions in a game, receptions yards in a game, and receptions in a season (68).
Defensively the Hawks were led by Jeremy Bednardz-Gray who had 5.5 tackles, including one for a loss.
Tony Goodman had five tackles and one forced fumble.
For Shaw, Raymond Williams had 95 yards on 14 carried. Landers ended the night with 230 yards and two TDS while cornerback Quintez Smith had eight tackles, a 74 yard interception return, and a 37 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
The Hawks move to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the CIAA while Shaw improves to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in league play.
