MURFREESBORO – In what proved to be a defensive battle at Garrison Stadium this afternoon, Brevard's defense had the final say. With just under a minute to play in the game the visiting Tornadoes defense put up a goal line stand that kept the Hawks from getting into the end zone on four straight plays from the three-yard line.
After four quarters of play Brevard came away with a 10-5 win this afternoon.
Chowan got on the board first in the game when freshman kicker
Cory Cline kicked a 35-yard field goal with 3:15 remaining in the first quarter. The score capped off a 65-yard, 12 play drive that ate up over five minutes of the clock.
Chowan's defense held off Brevard's offense for most of the first half, forcing five punts and two missed field goals. However with just :10 left on the clock in the second quarter Brevard's Will Cox completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Michael Moore to take a 6-0 lead. Brendan Frazer completed the point after attempt for the Tornadoes to give his team a 7-3 lead heading into halftime.
After taking the first possession of the third quarter to the Brevard 35 yard line the Hawks were forced to punt from the Brevard 35 yard line. Freshman punter
Patrick McKinnon pinned Brevard on their own one-yard line where Chowan's defense took over. After three plays Chowan forced Brevard to punt out of the end zone. Safety
Matt Virgil blocked Brevard's punt attempt for a safety, cutting Brevard's lead to 7-5.
Brevard added a field goal at the 11:16 mark of the fourth quarter to get on top of Chowan 10-5.
Chowan offense got possession of the ball with 2:54 to play in the game.
Randy Gilbert led the offense downfield to the Brevard 40 yard line before completing a 37-yard line to
Montino Williams, taking them to the Brevard 3-yard line. The Hawks failed to get in the end zone on four attempts. Brevard was called with a pass interference penalty on 4th and goal, giving Chowan one more shot at the end zone with nine ticks on the clock. Gilbert couldn't get away from a Brevard defender and took a sack to end the game.
Chowan's offense totaled 251 yards on 70 plays while the defense held Brevard to 271 yards on 66 plays. Gilbert threw for 175 yards on 18 out of 39 completions with no interceptions.
Sam Williams caught six passes for 66 yards in the loss while
Montino Williams had 2 catches and 37 yards. Defensively
Ronnie Fields had 10 tackles and 1 interception with a 28-yard return while
Shatae McEachin had 9 tackles, 2 of which were for a loss.
Jomo Brown and
Melvin Rogers had 7 tackles in the Hawks loss.
Chowan falls to 0-6 on the season while Brevard wins their first of the year, moving them to 1-5.
The Hawks will travel to North Greenville University for a 1:30pm game next Saturday.
