Braves Rally to Win Season Opener

ASHLAND, VA - Gutsy fourth quarter play by the Braves helped propel them to a 16-13 come-from-behind victory in their season opener at Randolph-Macon College this afternoon. After trailing 13-0 Chowan rallied to score 16 unanswered points for the season opening win.

On the Braves final drive of the game they faced fourth down and eight from their own 47 yard line, first-year skipper Lorick Atkinson made the call to go for it with just over 2:00 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Senior Taylor Furlough fired across the middle to freshman Brandon Myrick for an 18-yard completion and first down. After a 5 yard run by Jack Ross, Furlough hooked up with James Fox for a 20 yard pass play, bringing the Braves to the Yellow Jackets 10 yard line. Two plays later Junior Josh Floyd ran a reverse from 9 yards out for the score and 16-13 win. Freshman Nicholas Alejandro failed to complete the extra point.

The Braves defense provided a last stand on the Yellow Jackets last drive, ending the game with a quarterback sack by freshman Dustin Kunasek. Chowan totaled 228 yards of total offense on 50 plays while RMC had 289 yards of offense on 88 plays. The Braves gained 94 yards on the ground led by Jack Ross who had 41 yards on 20 carries to go with one touchdown. Furlough completed 9 out of 20 passes with one interception in the win. Alejandro kicked a 24-yard field goal in the win.

Shatae McEachin paced the Braves with 12 tackles, 2 for a loss while Ysidro Wilks and Brett McTheny each had 8 tackles in the win.

The Braves move to 1-0 on the year while RMC drops to 0-1. Chowan will travel to UVA-Wise next Saturday for a 1:30pm kick off before making their home season debut against Ferrum on September 17th.
