Braves Battle but Fall to Ferrum Late in Game

MURFREESBORO – Ferrum College scored 21 fourth quarter points to come from behind to beat the Braves in their season home opener this afternoon. Chowan battled, getting 391 yards of offense on 75 plays but at the same time gave up 457 yards of offense on the defensive side of the ball. 

Ferrum got on the board early in the game when Jermaine Pitts hooked up with tight end Chris Silk for a 59-yard strike. Michael Torbert gave Ferrum a 7-0 lead after kicking the PAT. Chowan scored on their next possession, capping off a 9-play, 65-yard drive with a Kevin Helmlinger 10 yard scamper to the end zone. Nicolas Alejandro make good on the PAT to tie the game at 7-7. The remainder of the quarter would remain scoreless. 

With just over six minutes to play in the second quarter, Josh Floyd hit James Fox for a 36-yard strike to give Chowan a 13-7 lead (Alejandro PAT failed). Ferrum scored to take the 14-13 lead at the 2:15 mark on a half back pass play. With just over a minute to go in the half, Taylor Furlough hit Floyd, who already threw for one touchdown, for a 44-yard strike. The Braves failed a two-point conversion attempt and took a 19-14 lead into the half. 

Ferrum scored on their first possession of the third quarter when Jacob Hawkins hit the end zone on a 5-yard run. They added a two-point conversion to take a 22-19 lead over Chowan. 

Floyd wasn't done scoring when he caught a 68-yard pass from Furlough just three plays later to take the lead back 26-22 (Alejandro PAT good). Ferrum took over in the fourth quarter, scoring four unanswered touchdowns to take the eventual 43-26 win. 

The Braves tallied 391 yards of offense, 282 in the air and 109 on the ground. Furlough was 10-19 for 183 yards, 1 interception, and two touchdown passes. Helmlinger threw for 63 yards on 5-10 completions with 1 rushing touchdown. 

Floyd caught 5 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns while also throwing a 36-yard paydirt pass. Fox caught three passes for 38 yards and a touchdown. Leading the ground attack for the Braves was Jack Ross who had 74 yards on 18 carries. 

Ronnie Fields led Chowan with 8 total tackles while Cody Brant collected 7 tackles in the game. Adam Powers had 5 tackles, 1 pass break up, and an interception.

Chowan falls to 1-2 while Ferrum improves to 3-0. The Braves will host the Apprentice School next Saturday at 1:00pm.
