Ferrum, Va. - Ferrum College got 227 second-half rushing yards to overcome Chowan College, 14-0, in an Atlantic Central Football Conference in Ferrum. Fullback Randy Anderson led the Panthers' ground attack with 115 yards on 19 carries, including 97 yards after halftime.
Ferrum improves to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACFC, while Chowan falls to 3-4 overall, 2-2 in league play. The Panthers are 6-0 for the first time since 1991, when they opened at 6-0 and finished the year with a 7-2 record.
After a scoreless first half, Ferrum scored at 2:20 of the third quarter on an Anderson 10-yard run. Richard Harr's kick gave Ferrum a 7-0 lead. After
Chowan's next possession ended in five plays, Ferrum took over on its own 38 yard line. The Panthers went 62 yards in three plays, scoring on a 30-yard run by tailback Tony Childress at 14:52 of the fourth quarter. Harr's kick gave Ferrum a 14-0 lead.
The Panthers rushed for 264 rushing yards on 55 carries, to Chowan's 98 rushing yards on 42 carries. Chowan quarterback
Chris Dent went 8-16 for 96 yards and was sacked four times for a loss of 29 yards.
Doug Leary also took snaps for the Braves, going 2-9 for 23 yards and an interception. Ferrum quarterback Brandon Rimes was 1-5 for eight yards and an interception. Childress had 71 yards and a score on 13 carries.
Chowan tailback
Lamont Boone, who rushed for 127 yards in last week's 26-10 win over ACFC opponent Salisbury State University, was held to 33 rushing yards on 12 carries. Running back
Timmy Carter had 30 yards on eight carries. Wide receiver
Jeremy Forbes made four receptions for 78 yards.
Chowan will be idle next week and will host ACFC opponent Wesley College Oct. 31.
