Alexis Avery enters her seventh year as Associate Athletic Director of Compliance in the Chowan University athletic department. 

Prior to coming to Chowan, Avery served as the Assistant Director of Compliance at Jackson State University.  While serving in that capacity, she developed internal policies and procedures and identified relevant issues within the department while monitoring camps, clinics and playing/practice seasons for 18 NCAA Division I sports.  Additionally, Avery evaluated initial and transfer student-athlete eligibility, served as the institutional liaison to the NCAA Eligibility Center and assisted with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

While at Auburn University at Montgomery, Avery served as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance.  She was instrumental in assisting with the completion of the supplemental application for NCAA Division II membership and developing compliance related procedures for eligibility certification for the NAIA and NCAA.  Avery also was involved in coordinating Life Skills seminars and activities while working with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Before Avery’s stint at Auburn University at Montgomery, she spent over two years at Alabama State University and three years at Bethune-Cookman University.  While at Alabama State, Avery monitored and verified all NCAA, SWAC and institutional rules and regulations, investigated violations, filed waivers, assisted with the development of departmental manuals for various institutional offices and was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Compliance Office.

During her time as the Assistant Director of Compliance/Eligibility Specialist at Bethune-Cookman, Avery assisted with the collection of Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Academic Progress Rate Report (APR) data, created playing/practice season reports for seventeen sports and certified initial eligibility and amateurism certification.

Avery spent time early in her career at Johnson C. Smith University, serving as Compliance Coordinator while coaching volleyball and softball.  Prior to her time at Johnson C. Smith University, Avery was the Administrative Assistant at the CIAA for three years. 

Avery graduated from Hampton University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management.  She was a four-year volleyball student-athlete at Hampton and was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. 

Avery is a member of the National Association for Athletic Compliance (NAAC), NACWAA and has individual certification as part of N4A.  She resides in Murfreesboro, N.C.
