Kurt von Bargen enters his fourth year with the Hawks’ football program.
He served as the Assistant Coach for Linebackers during the 2015 season and was promoted to Defensive Coordinator in 2016.
Prior to coming to Chowan, von Bargen worked for the University of South Florida (Division I) as a graduate assistant and was later promoted to Assistant Linebackers Coach and Assistant Defensive Line Coach over the course of three seasons with the Bulls. Von Bargen was also responsible for all of the weekly offensive opponent breakdowns and scouting reports, the coordination of the team discipline program, and recruiting in ten states.
Prior to South Florida, von Bargen spent two seasons at DIII Trinity College as the Outside Linebackers Coach and Assistant Coordinator for Special Teams. Von Bargen helped the Bantams lead the nation in rush defense (2010 & 2011), total defense (2011) and scoring defense (2011).
Prior to working at Trinity, von Bargen served as the Outside Linebackers Coach and Assistant Coordinator for Special Teams for the United States Coast Guard Academy. He served the Academy for just under one season while recruiting student-athletes in five states.
Prior to Von Bargen’s collegiate coaching career, he competed at East Carolina University as a defensive back. While playing for the Pirates, von Bargen was a participant in the PapaJohns.com Bowl (2006), Hawaii Bowl (2007) and Liberty Bowl (2008). Von Bargen and the Pirates won the Conference USA Championship in 2008. Most notably, von Bargen represented East Carolina University as a NCAA Rudy Award nominee and was awarded ECU’s Rick Bankston Memorial Award in 2007.
Von Bargen graduated from East Carolina in 2009 with a Bachelors degree in Health Education and Promotion while being a member of the ECU’s Dean’s List and Honor Roll. Von Bargen is currently pursuing Masters degrees from Trinity College (American Studies) and South Florida (Physical Education).
