About Chowan Athletics

Athletics has a rich and deeply rooted tradition at Chowan University, dating back as early as the 1930's. The athletic department has fielded many successful teams throughout its history, including a vibrant junior college athletic program that was in existence through 1992. The following year, Chowan made the transition from a two-year institution to a four-year degree granting institution and received full NCAA Division III playing status in 1995.

Since the 2005-2006 playing season, Chowan University has competed as an NCAA DII Independent and offers a wide variety of intercollegiate athletics to include 11 varsity sports as well as a co-ed cheerleading squad. Chowan University competes on the varsity level in baseball, men's and women's basketball, football, men's golf, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis, and volleyball.

Chowan University has dual-affiliation with the NCAA and the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association).
