Hawks Capitalize on Six-Goal Run to Secure First Win Versus Fleet

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan University men's soccer team opened Conference Carolinas play with a commanding 6-2 victory over Erskine College on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Soccer Field.

After an early 2-0 jump by the Fleet, the Hawks responded with six unanswered goals to secure their first win of the season. Clayton Verdin and Andre Camargo each recorded a pair of goals, while Robbie Deighan added a goal and an assist. Owen Sweeney and Tomas Alvarez also contributed to the Hawks' offensive effort with a goal and assist.

Chowan finished with a season-high 32 shots, placing 16 on target, as the Hawks put together a strong team performance on both ends of the field.

Erskine struck first, converting a penalty kick just 1:13 into the match before Loureiro doubled the Fleet's lead at the 8:15 mark.

The Hawks quickly answered. Just over a minute later, Deighan put Chowan on the board with an unassisted goal at 9:31. Verdin followed with his first goal of the afternoon at 10:21, with Fernando Hernandez providing the assist to bring the Hawks within one.

Verdin struck again at 26:51, this time finding the back of the net off an assist from Camargo to give Chowan its first lead of the afternoon at 3-2. The Hawks carried the one-goal advantage into halftime.

Chowan continued to build on its lead in the second half, with Sweeney scoring at 59:22 off an assist from Alvarez to push the Hawks ahead 4-2.

Camargo then added back-to-back goals to close out the scoring. His first came at 64:41 off an assist from Deighan before Verdin set him up for his second goal of the afternoon at 66:54, giving the Hawks a 6-2 advantage.

Verdin finished with four shots, all four on target, while Camargo recorded seven shots with five on goal. Deighan added four shots with two on target. Luke Wilson, Twan Kuiper and Demarion McCray each recorded two shots.
