Hawks Stumble at Home Against #22 Valdosta State

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan University football team dropped a non-conference match-up against #22 Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon at Garrison Stadium. The Hawks now stand at 1-2 overall while Valdosta State improves to 2-1 on the season.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Dominic Haney hauled 10 passes for 107 yards while quarterback Maurice Smith threw for 202 yards completing 24 passes. Jack Beylo put the Hawks on the board with a successful field goal from 27 yards. Demarcus Carroll led the defense with five solo tackles and four assisted, while Darryl Harris added five solo tackles and 2 assisted. Samuel Tagg had a forced fumble that was recovered by Jamall Browning who returned it for 31 yards. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

First half:

The first quarter started in an exchange of offensive possessions for the Hawks and the Blazers until Valdosta State scored with 3:55 left to bring the score to 7-0 at the end of the quarter. Chowan's defense had a big play at the 14-minute mark in the second quarter. Samuel Tagg forced a fumble which was then scooped up by Jamall Browning who carried it 31 yards to give Chowan back possession of the ball. VSU would shortly answer four minutes into the second quarter with a 14-yard rushing touchdown putting the score at 14-0. The Blazers would find Chowan's end zone three more times before the half making the score 35-0.

Second half:

Valdosta State would open up the third quarter with a touchdown bringing the score to 42-0. Jack Beylo would score a field goal with five minutes left in the third quarter from the 27 yard line and the Blazers would also answer once more putting the score at 49-3. The Hawks offense would come alive in the 4th quarter with Maurice Smith connecting with Dominic Haney, Rodney Green, and Dezmond Randolph on consecutive plays. However, this effort would not be enough as Valdosta State would score two more touchdowns in the 4th quarter making the final score 56-3.

UP NEXT

The Hawks will have a bye week before hitting the road to face Shorter University in Rome, Georgia, on September 27, 2025. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM.
