Big Plays in the Second Half Lift Chowan over Erskine on the Road

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Chowan University football team picked up a 34-30 road win on Saturday afternoon to improve to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Hawks scored 14 points in the 4th quarter, including an 82 yard kick off return for a touchdown by Antwone Godley with under a minute to play in regulation, which turned out to be the game winning score.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After trailing 16-13 at the half, Erskine scored late in the 3rd quarter to take a 23-13 lead. Isaiah Fulton returned a 55 yard interception for a score (Jack Beylo PAT good) to cut the Erskine lead to 23-20. NyJal "Jelly" Johnson hit Malique Frazier for a 20-yard strike to take a 27-23 lead with 13:30 left in the game. Both teams held one another out of the endzone until Erskine hit paydirt with just under a minute to play to snatch back the lead at 30-27. On the ensuing kick off, Godley received the ball deep in Chowan territory and returned the ball 82 yards for the lead and eventual 34-30 win (Beylo PAT good). 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Offensively the Hawks gained 243 yards of total offense, led by their ground attack where they gained 158 yards. Romeo Felton paced the Hawks ground attack with 87 yards rushing on 18 carries. Dominic Haney rushed for 64 yards out of the backfield, caught a pass for 10 yards, and also threw for 32 yards on 5 completions. Malique Frazier led the wide receiver core with 4 catches and 47 yards and a touchdown while Luke Krall caught 5 passes for 28 yards. Chowan split quarterback duties between NyJal "Jelly" Johnson and Haney. Johnson completed 6 of 7 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown. 

Defensively the Hawks were led by Jylon Council who collected 8 tackles. Daryl Harris had 7 tackles while teammate Jamarius Isaac collected 6 tackles. Harris also had a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Isaiah Fulton had 5 tackles to go with his 55-yard interception return for a touchdown. Malachi Howell had three solo tackles, a quarterback hurry, and 2.0 sacks for a loss of 15 yards. 

UP NEXT 

Chowan will wrap up the regular season at home against Ferrum College for Senior day on Saturday, November 8th in the annual Hall of Fame game. Kick-Off is scheduled for 1:00pm at Garrison Stadium.
