MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan University football team suffered a 31-16 loss at the hands of North Greenville University in Conference Carolinas gridiron play on Saturday afternoon.
Chowan fell to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the league after Saturday's game while North Greenville improved to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
North Greenville struck first in the game when they capped off a 13 play drive with a score to get up on the Hawks 7-0 after the opening series. The Hawks answered quickly with NyJal "Jelly" Johnson hooking up with Jakobe Lane for a 63 yard completion on the ensuing series. Jamison Davis punched it in and Jack Beylo made good on the extra point to knot the game at 7 all with the 7:52 mark of the first quarter.
Beylo stretched the Hawks lead to 10-7 after hitting a 19 yard field goal at the 2:27 mark of the 1st quarter. North Greenville went on to score at the 6:00 mark of the 2nd quarter to take the lead 14-10 over Chowan. Coming out of halftime, NGU scored two unanswered touchdowns in the 3rd quarter before Johnson connected with Rodney Green from 5 yards out to make the score 28-16.
NGU went on to score on a 26 yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to get the 31-16 lead. North Greenville used a strong ground attack to help propel them to the win over the Hawks at home after gaining 249 yards of rush offense. Chowan tallied 163 yards of passing offense and 108 rush yards.

NyJal "Jelly" Johnson passed for 163 yards on a 12 of 19 afternoon. He connected with Rodney Green for a 5 yard touchdown strike. Jakobe Lane caught one pass for 63 yards while Dominic Haney had three catches for 27 yards. Jamison Davis scored a rushing touchdown in the first quarter.
Once again Demarcus Carroll showed up big for the Hawks defense. Carroll led all tacklers with 10 total tackles and one sack in the game. Daryl Harris collected 7 tackles and 1.5 sacks for a loss of nine yards. Justin Taylor had nine tackles and Omari Kinsler had seven tackles.
