MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan football team suffered a tough 24-20 loss against Barton College on Saturday evening. With this loss, Chowan's record drops to 0-2 for the season, while Barton improves to 1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan took an early 6-0 lead with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Maurice Smith to Gabriel Jackson. Barton responded with a 39-yard field goal by Andrew Bontekoe, making it 6-3. Chowan's Jamison Davis scored on a two yard run to spread the Hawks lead 13-3, a lead the Hawks would take into the halftime break.  In the second half,  Barton scored three touchdowns to take a 24-13 lead over the Hawks. Rallying back in the fourth quarter, Chowan's Smith answered Barton's calls after capping off a 60-yard touchdown drive with a 20 yard paydirt scamper with just under 8 minutes to play in the game. Despite a defensive stand by the Hawks, Barton's defense put a stop to any last minute comeback attempts and held on for a 24-20 victory.

Chowan's Maurice Smith, threw for 97 yards and rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown, Barton's defense held firm. Chowan's passing game saw Smith connect on 12 of 21 attempts, but Barton's 218 rushing yards and key stops ultimately secured their victory. Jakobe Lane also made a significant impact with 70 receiving yards on 8 catches.

Komari Clark led the defensive effort with 9 total tackles, including 1 tackle for loss. Charles Alberty contributed with 7 tackles, while Kennypride Toh added 5 tackles. Samuel Tagg and Darrick Badley each recorded 5 tackles, with Tagg also breaking up a pass.

UP NEXT

Chowan will begin conference play with a match-up against Mississippi College on September 28th. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Garrison Stadium.
