MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Football team was unable to overcome a sluggish first half as Barton nipped the Hawks 17-3 in the 2022 season opener at Garrison Stadium under the lights on Thursday evening.

Montre Moore led the defense with nine tackles. Kmare Carey posted six tackles, an interception and a blocked punt.
Kyle Lotz notched the only points for the Hawks on a 40-yard field goal
Jaylon Boyd produced 64 yards rushing on eight carries. Tyrek McNeil scampered for 63 yards.
Laurence King collected five receptions for 76 yards. The two quarterbacks combined for 11-29 for 124 yards.
Barton rushed for 247 yards led by Jordan Terrell with 178 yards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
After a pair of unsuccessful drives for the Hawks to open the contest, Barton would jump on the board after a 68-yard pitch-and-catch to lead 7-0.
Following the Bulldog touchdown, Max Smyth found Laurence King for a 33 yard reception down the right side. The drive would stall following a sack.
Barton would march down the field on their rushing attack to end the first quarter.
Second Quarter:
The Bulldogs moved the ball to the outskirts of the redzone prior to Malik Rencher picking off the pass. The following play for the Hawks would hand the ball back to the Bulldogs as a deep shot would be intercepted.
Barton turned the interception into points as the Bulldogs connected from 31 yards out to lead 10-0.
Chowan's offense continued to stall throughout the frame, but the defense continued to stand tall. Barton marched down into the redzone before forcing a 24 yard field goal attempt. Jordan Brown would come up big to block the attempt and end the threat with 1:24 remaining in the half.
Tyrek McNeil picked up a pair of runs of 12 and 13 yards before the end of the half.
Third Quarter:
On the opening drive of the half, Chowan's defense forced a three-and-out as Kmare Carey partially blocked a punt and set the Hawks up near midfield.
Chowan moved inside the redzone as Rashad McKee found Jeremiah Smith for a first down. Tyreek McNeil picked up an 11 yard gain to move the ball to the Barton 16. The Bulldog defense would step in front of the pass and end the drive.
After a pair of penalties aided the Bulldogs down the field, Simeon Burns forced a fumble at the goal line to end another threatening drive.
Jaylon Boyd gave the Hawks some breathing room with a pair of 17 yard runs to move the ball towards midfield. Rashad McKee connected with Laurence King for a 24 yard reception. The drive would stall forcing a long field goal attempt. Kyle Lotz just cleared the goal post on a 40 yard attempt to pull the Hawks to with a score, 10-3.
Fourth Quarter:
Barton used a long pass play before Jordan Terrell scored from eight yards out to put the Bulldogs up 17-3.
The Hawks moved the ball down the field on their next drive behind a 15 yard run by Tyrek McNeil. Rashad McKee connected with Jordaan Bailey for a 19 yard reception and Jaylon Boyd rumbled his was for a 13 yard rush. A holding penalty set the Hawks back inside the redzone before a fourth-down throw in the endzone would fall incomplete.
Barton milked the clock for the final 4:51 of the contest to secure the victory.
