Hawks WLAX Nets Win In Final Minute Over Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Chowan Women's Lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season in dramatic fashion as Heather Orell scored with 1:46 left in the contest to put the Hawks ahead of Coker 15-14 on the road Tuesday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Heather Orell posted a career-high eight points scoring five times and assisting on three goals.  Alexandria Hammonds found the back of the net four times.

Tashana Barnett and Jasmine Latney scored twice.  Leslie Escobar dished out two assists to go with one goal.  Misten White scored a goal in the win.

Mallory Dunker picked up the win in goal stopping seven shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Alexandria Hammonds put the Hawks on the board less than four minutes into the contest as Heather Orell recorded the assist.  Leslie Escobar found Orell for the second tally of the contest 68 seconds later.

Heather Orell would put the Hawks up 3-0 on a free position goal.  Coker would respond three goals in the matter of 40 seconds to tie the contest up.  Alexandria Hammond and Jasmine Latney scored an unassisted goal to end the run.

Coker would once again tie the contest at 5-all before Misten White scored a man-up goal off the assist from Leslie Escobar to lead 6-5 late in the half.

The Cobras scored two goals in the final minute of the half to lead 7-6 at the break.

Second Half:

Tashana Barnett took advantage of the extra-man opportunity with a goal as Heather Orell relayed the pass to Barnett.

Following two goals by the Cobras, Heather Orell and Jasmine Latney evened the score with a goal each.  The back-and-forth scoring continued as Coker led 12-9 with 11:11 on the scoreboard.

Jasmine Latney found Tashana Barnett to spark a rally by the Hawks.  Alexandria Hammonds scored on a free position goal and an assisted goal by Heather Orell to equalize the score at 12-all.

Heather Orell gave the Hawks a 13-12 lead with under five minutes to play but the Cobras responded with two goals to take the lead 14-13 with 3:30 remaining.

Leslie Escobar scored the equalizing goal with 2:31 remaining.  On the ensuing draw control, Alexandria Hammonds corralled the attempt to give the Hawks a chance.  Heather Orell would find the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal with 1:46 left.

The Hawks looked for an insurance goal as Alexandria Hammonds won the next draw control.  Heather Orell's attempt with 34 ticks on the clock was saved.  Coker turned the ball over on their final possession.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns to Conference Carolinas play on Saturday, March 2 against Southern Wesleyan.  Opening draw control is at 3pm.
