Chowan Hands Belmont Abbey Loss In Double Overtime

BELMONT, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Soccer team upended regionally ranked Belmont Abbey on the road in the regular season finale in double overtime, 2-1.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Chowan notched their first win over Belmont Abbey and snapped the Crusaders' three match win streak.

Carolina Lucci posted three points in the contest with a goal and an assist.  Sabrina Henderson tallied her tenth goal of the season as the game-winner.

Rebekah Langley registered an assist in the win.  Olivia Borer allowed one goal and stopped 11 shots.

Chowan is the fourth seed heading into the Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Tournament on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Both teams swapped shots in the half as Stephanie Quintanilla and Carolina Lucci had attempts saved.

Rebekah Langley won the ball at midfield and played the ball up the right side of the pitch.  Carolina Lucci worked her way to the side of the net as the attempt bounced off the keeper and crossed the end line for the 1-0 lead in the 32'.

Olivia Borer would keep the Crusaders off the scoreboard in the half with three saves in the final 10 minutes of the half.

Second Half:

Once again, Olivia Borer would stop the oncoming attack early in the half to maintain the 1-0 advantage.

Belmont Abbey would not go away quietly as they found the equalizer off a corner kick in the 81' to even the match at 1-all.

Carolina Lucci tallied a shot on goal in the 83' followed by a Crusaders' attempt at the game-winner in the 89'.

First Overtime:

Olivia Borer stopped the only shot she faced in the overtime period.  Rebekah Langley's attempt in the final minute of the first overtime period was blocked off the corner.

Second Overtime:

Ashlyn Smith played a through ball up to the streaking Carolina Lucci.  Lucci dribbled past the oncoming keeper and found Sabrina Henderson on the right side of the box and poked the attempt passed the retreating keeper and the defender on the end line for the game-winner in the 104'.

UP NEXT

Chowan hosts Emmanuel in the Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Quarterfinals on Tuesday, October 30 at 2pm.  The Hawks are the fourth seed, while Emmanuel is the fifth seed in the tournament.

Chowan defeated Emmanuel last week, 1-0, in Franklin Springs, Ga.
