BOX SCORE The Chowan University women's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2012-13 season and first CIAA victory on Monday evening after defeating the Saint Augustine's University Lady Falcons 62-57.
The Hawks were led by
Talaya Lynch as she scored 21 points, along with
Janelle Murphy who followed with 10 points.
Danielle Coleman picked up 12 rebounds in the victory.
Porscha Walton chipped in 13 points for Saint Augustine's University.
The game was evenly matched through the duration of the first half with six ties and four lead changes. It wasn't until there were eight minutes left in the first half when the Hawks went on a 7-3 run sparked by
Danielle Coleman seeking three crucial free throws to propel the Hawks to a 23-18 lead heading into halftime.
Chowan came out firing in the second half, using a 9-0 run to gain a 31-18 advantage over the Lady Falcons. The 13 point lead at the 17:46 mark was the Hawks' largest lead of the game.
The Lady Falcons whittled the Hawk's lead down to a mere two points with 2:03 left in the game but
Talaya Lynch scored six out of the eight final points to secure the 62-57 win for the Hawks.
With the win, the Hawks move to 1-11 on the season and 1-3 in the CIAA. The Lady Falcons fall to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Chowan heads to Winston-Salem State on Saturday January 12th for a CIAA crossover match-up. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 pm.
