BOX SCORE The Chowan University women's basketball team fell 60-42 to the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls on Monday evening.
Summer Curtis had her first double-double of the season as she scored 13 points and hauled in 10 rebounds.
Talaya Lynch chipped in 11 points for the Hawks. Three Golden Bulls had double digit points as Karina Bunch tallied 15 points and Deanna Downer and LaKendra Wilkerson pulled in 11 points apiece. Wilkerson recorded a double-double with 13 rebounds in addition to 11 points.
The Hawks started out in the hole after an 8-0 run by the Golden Bulls just two minutes into the contest. Midway through the first half, Chowan trailed 20-4; their points coming from free throws from
Janelle Murphy and
Courtney Smith. Smith's lay-up made the score 20-6 with 9:48 left in the half.
Summer Curtis and
Naima Harrington teamed up pull the Hawks within 11 with 6:24 left in the half.
Hawks' fouls and a spread offensive attack from the Golden Bulls allowed Johnson C. Smith to take a 28-13 advantage with just over one minute to play in the first half. Curtis' lay-up made the score 28-15 with :45 left in the half, and Lynch's free throws gave the Hawks two more points on the board.
The Hawks closed out the first half trailing 28-17.
The Golden Bulls came aggressively in the second half with a three pointer from Briya Dance and jumpers from LaKendra Wilkerson and Chante' Bell to put Johnson C. Smith ahead 35-17 early in the half. Curtis and Lynch's lay-ups made the score 35-21 and a three pointer from Lynch gave the Hawks an offensive spark five minuntes into the second half.
The Golden Bulls quickly answered back to gain a 44-26 advantage with 7:27 left in the game. Lynch, Murphy and Harrington rallied to score seven unanswered points for the Hawks. With Chowan trailing 44-33 at the five minute mark, the Hawks and Golden Bulls traded baskets for the remainder of the contest, and Johnson C. Smith pulled away with the 60-42 victory.
The Hawks fall to 0-8 on the season and 0-1 in CIAA play after Monday's loss. The Golden Bulls improve to 4-6 and 1-0 in the league. Chowan heads to Norfolk State University on Wednesday to take on the Spartans. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 pm.
