Hawks Tripped Up at Home

Janelle Murphy led all scorers in Wednesday's game with 23 points.
MURFREESBORO, NC- BOX SCORE The Chowan University women's basketball team fell to the UNC-Pembroke Lady Braves 60-45 on Wednesday evening. 
 
 Janelle Murphy led all scorers in the game with 23 points, but it was not enough to overcome UNC-Pembroke.  Murphy also led the Hawks in rebounds with six in the loss.  Two Lady Braves had double-doubles with Courtney Bolton grabbing 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Jazmine Kemp tallying 11 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Down 5-0 initially, a jumper by Murphy and a three pointer from T'Arra Cutting knotted the game 5-5.  A Hawk foul allowed UNC-P's Chandrica Fuller to take two foul shots.  She made good on both attempts and the Lady Braves took the lead, which they maintained for the remainder of the half and the game.   
 
Danielle Coleman's lay-up added two for the Hawks just under the 13 minute mark.  Chowan's offense was silenced by a 10-0 Lady Braves' run as UNC-Pembroke grabbed a 25-7.  Karina Monroe put the Hawks back on the board as she sank two free throws to make the score 25-9 with 7:32 left to play in the first half. 
 
The Hawks doubled their score before the first half was completed after jumper's from Courtney Smith, Karina Monroe, and a three pointer from Janelle Murphy.  Chowan closed out the half with a 9-6 run, but still trailed the Lady Braves 31-18 at halftime. 
 
The Hawks and Lady Braves traded baskets early in the second half.  Down 43-31 with 12:35 left in the game, Murphy's three pointer inched the Hawks closer to the Lady Braves.  Murphy struck again from behind the three point arc just under the 12:00 mark to shift the score 43-34. 
 
The Hawks put together a 10-8 run to reach the five minute mark, but the Lady Braves still led 52-44.  Chowan wan unable to overcome the point deficit and fell the UNC-Pembroke 60-45. 
 
The UNC-Pembroke Lady Braves improve to 5-2 after Wednesday's win. 
 
With the loss, Chowan falls to 0-7 on the 2012-13 season.  They head to Charlotte, NC on Monday to take on Johnson C. Smith in their first CIAA match-up of the year.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm.  Live coverage information will be released as it becomes available.
