MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped a 66-56 decision at home on Tuesday evening against the Central State University Lady Marauders.
The loss puts the Hawks on a three game skid to start their season. The Lady Marauders stay undefeated after beating their fourth straight opponent by ten points or more.
Janelle Murphy had another standout night for the Hawks. Murphy has led the team in scoring in all three games this season and scored 13 points in Tuesday's loss while grabbing four steals.
T'Arra Cutting and
Courtnee Springs each chipped in 11 points for the Hawks.
The first half remained close with each team vying for control until a lay-up from Central State's Tajha Walker gave the Lady Marauders a 21-18 lead over the Hawks with 2:43 left to play in the half. Central State closed out the first half on a 10-0 run to take a 28-18 lead heading into halftime.
Kaela Nelson opened up the second half with a jumper to move the Hawks within eight of Central State. Just as the Hawks seemed poised to comeback after a basket from
T'Arra Cutting, Aryelle Covington shifted the momentum back to Central State with lay-up to give the Lady Marauders a 30-22 point lead.
With 14:59 left in the game, Trinesha Cornell's foul shot extended the Lady Marauder's lead to 10 points.
Janelle Murphy brought the Hawks within five as she netted a jumper, a lay-up and a foul shot to make the score 37-32.
With 10:45 left in the game, a lay-up from Central State's Taylor Hanson allowed the Lady Marauder's to pull ahead 47-38. Just over five minutes later with the Hawks trailing 56-44, Shakeira Lang's lay-up gave Central State their largest lead of the game to give the Lady Marauder's a 58-44 point advantage.
The Hawks and Lady Marauders traded baskets for the remainder of the game, but Chowan was unable to cut the lead. Central State grabbed the 66-56 victory to move to 4-0 on the season.
Chowan falls to 0-3 on the young season and returns home on Tuesday November 27
th to take on Johnson C. Smith University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm.
