Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO – The Chowan Softball team split a pair of decisions with visiting West Virginia State University on Monday. The teams needed extra innings in game one before the Yellow Jackets prevailed 4-3. Chowan responded with a 6-4 victory in the nightcap. The Hawks now stand at 19-13 overall, while WVSU sits at 8-4.
Hits were hard to come by for both teams in the opener. Chowan got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when
Allie Kolezynski scored on an errant Yellow Jacket throw. The Hawks would not score again until the home half of the fifth. In that inning, Kolezynski and
Brenna Thomas scored to even the score at three.
After seven innings, the teams remained tied and went into extras. Cassie Nowery scored for WVSU in the top of the eighth, and pitcher Kelsey Lorraine kept the Hawks off the board to seal the victory.
Allie Kolezynski went 2-3 from the plate for Chowan, scoring two runs. She also pitched three innings of relief, giving up no hits but suffering the loss. Chowan stole four bases in the game.
Two big innings helped Chowan take game two, 6-4. Eight Hawks reached base in the second inning, leading to four runs to give Chowan an early 4-0 advantage.
Mindy Byrd led off with a triple while three others collected singles to spark the offense.
Chowan added two more runs in the third when
Lacey Wildeboer and
Liz Hipple drove in one run apiece. The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh, but their comeback fell short as Wildeboer closed it out on the mound.
Mindy Byrd and
Liz Hipple each had two hits for Chowan. Hipple also had a team-high two RBI. Byrd and
Megan Wade scored two runs apiece for Chowan.
Lacey Wildeboer earned the win, pitching four innings in relief, giving up four runs off six hits and striking out three.
Today was the final home game of the 2011 season for Chowan. They will travel to play Lincoln University (PA) in CIAA action this Thursday, March 24. First pitch is set for 3:00pm
