Box Score RICHMOND, VA – Chowan University could not overcome six turnovers against Virginia Union University, as they fell to the Panthers 43-29 on Saturday. The Hawks fall to 1-4 on the season (0-3 in CIAA play), and VUU is now 4-2.
The Panthers totaled 479 yards of total offense, much of which was aided by Chowan miscues. After Virginia Union scored on their first offensive drive, they forced a fumble on Chowan's first play from scrimmage. Chowan forced a Panther punt, however, to thwart their drive.
The Hawks began their next possession on their own four yard line, following the punt. Again, on the first play of the drive, Virginia Union stopped Hawks running back
JR Williams in the end zone for a safety. With 9:36 left in the first quarter, VUU owned an 8-0 lead.
The Chowan defense picked up as the quarter went on, and
David Fulton intercepted a VUU pass with 5:11 remaining in the first quarter. Four plays later,
Adrian Ferns found the end zone to bring the score to 8-6. Chowan's attempt at the two-point conversion failed.
On Virginia Union's next drive, quarterback Cheston Hickman rushed it in from 52 yards out to extend their lead to 15-6. They again struck on their next drive, going 46 yards on six plays. 45 seconds into the second quarter, the Panthers had a 22-6 lead.
The Hawks responded later in the second quarter, as
Patrick Charles took Chowan's second interception to the VUU 42 yard line. Three plays later, freshman quarterback
Jordan Roby found
Robert Holland in the end zone to bring the score to 22-14.
Reigning CIAA quarterback of the week Cheston Hickman put VUU up 29-14 late in the first half with a 55 yard touchdown pass to Trevon Winston. That score would remain until halftime.
The third quarter was dominated by Chowan, which brought them back into the game. The Hawks received the ball to open the stanza, and went on a methodical 16 play, 68 yard drive over six minutes and 33 seconds.
Adrian Ferns rushed for 36 yards on the drive.
Chowan forced a three and out on Virginia Union's ensuing drive, and took over on their own 37 yard line.
Jordan Roby and
JR Williams took over from there. Roby found Williams on consecutive passes and scored on a 49 yard toss to tie the score at 29 with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter.
Roby threw an interception on the Hawks next drive, which led to a Panthers touchdown late in the third quarter. Heading into the final stanza, Chowan trailed by just seven points.
Early in the fourth, however, VUU's Hickman connected on another touchdown pass to give the Panthers a 43-29 lead. Virginia Union intercepted two passes on Chowan's final three drives to make sure the Hawks did not find the end zone.
Adrian Ferns led the Hawks rushing attack with 51 yards on 13 carries.
Jordan Roby connected on 10 of 30 passes, but threw five interceptions.
Patrick Charles, who leads the team in tackles, accumulated nine more tonight.
Chowan will head to Lincoln University (PA) next Saturday to take on the Lions. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
