Box Score

MOUNT OLIVE, NC – Mount Olive dominated the match statistically, but Chowan scored on each of its first two shots and held on to defeat the Trojans 2-1 in non-conference men's soccer Wednesday at Amon Field. The Trojans outshot Chowan 24-4 and narrowly missed scoring the tying goal just before the final horn. Chowan improves their overall record to 3-10 on the year, the most wins the program has had since transitioning to a DII program (2006).

A foul gave Mount Olive (3-8-1) an indirect kick from just left off the box and the clock was stopped with 4.1 seconds left in regulation. Tyler Vandevender chipped the ball into a crowd of players in front of the goal, but a Trojan header attempt hit the top of the crossbar and rolled down the back of the net as time expired. The shot was the third by the Trojans in the final 15 minutes to hit the crossbar.

Chowan goalkeeper Scott Cullen sparked the Hawks' win with 13 saves, including saves on each of Mount Olive's first five shots.

The Trojans had six shots in the first 12 minutes, before Chowan (3-10-0) recorded its first. But the Hawks' initial shot attempt was a penalty kick after Mount Olive was called for a foul in the box. Ross Danzeisen converted the pk to give Chowan a 1-0 lead at the 14:33 mark.

Cullen made a save on John Mendoza's 19-yard direct kick and a 20-yard attempt by Chris McClaugherty hit the left post as the Trojans remained scoreless. Chowan extended the lead to 2-0 on only its second shot of the match when Adam Smith headed in a long service from Brandon Chambers at 31:25.

Mount Olive got on the scoreboard less than three minutes later when Vandevender converted a 19-yard direct kick from the top left of the box. Neither team had a shot the remainder of the half.

Tonight's match was the second meeting this season between the two teams. The Trojans won the first meeting 4-0 September 8 in Murfreesboro.

The Hawks are set to host North Greenville in a 4:00pm match on Saturday. It is a doubleheader with the women, who will play at 2:00pm against the Crusaders.
