Women's Tennis Drops Final Home Match to Bears

MURFREESBORO- The women's tennis team dropped their final home match to the Bears of Shaw University by the final match score of 8-1. Freshmen Jennifer Mitchell and Jena'y Nelson teamed to pick up the Hawk's lone point in the match.

After the Bears jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles play, Chowan was unable to rally a comeback. Kashae Beverly anchored the #1 seed, but fell to Fernanda Silva by the final score of 6-0, 6-0. Amanda Spaulding followed as the #2 seed for the Hawks, then Tara Lunney as the #3 seed. Spaulding dropped her match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to Lolia Kienka. Lunney lost to Evan Okafor by the final score, 6-2, 6-0. Mitchell, Brittney Johnson, Nelson rounded out the #4, #5, and #6 seeds, respectively. Mitchell lost to Xania Steele, 6-1, 6-0. Johnson fought but fell short in both sets to Kiara Henderson, 7-5, 7-6(3). Nelson lost in straight sets to Jasmine Rivera by the final score of 6-1, 6-1.

The Hawks finished the season 4-9 overall. Seniors Shirley Baines and Brittney Johnson played their last home match as a Hawk.
