WINGATE, NC - The softball team split a doubleheader with Wingate University to wrap up the 2009 regular season this afternoon. The Hawks won game one of the twinbill 3-1 but dropped the nightcap 8-0. The Hawks improve to 30-21 on the year, the first time that the program has won 30 games since transitioning to DII in 2005.

Chowan got on the board first in their 3-1 win. In the fourth inning Mindy Byrd led the inning off with a walk. After back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Jenna Lassiter and Megan Bass, Chowan's Alex Allen singled to left field to drive in Byrd for the 1-0 lead. The Hawks added two more runs in their next at-bat to get up on the Bulldogs 3-0. Wingate got on the board in the 6th inning with a run but the pitching of Shellie Wimpey combined with solid defensive play put the Hawks in the driver's seat for their 30th win of the season. Wimpey pitched the complete game to move to 17-9 on the year. She scattered six hits in the win. Kaytee McLaughlin was 1-2 with a run scored while Allen was 1-2 with an RBI. Byrd scored twice and drew two walks in the win.

The Hawks suffered an 8-0 loss in the nightcap and were held to just two hits in the game. The Bulldogs pounded out 13 hits on their way to the nightcap win. Allie Kolezynksi picked up the loss on the mound, moving her to 13-13 on the mound this season. Tricia Gorman and Lassiter picked up a hit each for the Hawks in the two-hit outing.
