MURFREESBORO - Newport News Apprentice School scored five runs over their last four at-bats to edge the Hawks 10-7 in baseball action on Friday afternoon. The Buidlers exploded for five runs in the first inning to jump out on top of Chowan. The Hawks battled back to knot the game with five runs of their own in the third inning but it was the Buiders who would leave winners in the end.
The Hawks move to 22-14 on the year after the loss while the Builders move to 23-11 on the year. The Hawks knotted the game at 5-5 with two doubles and two singles and a perfect squeeze bunt by Nate Stanton to score Mike Taylor from third. John Kellett drove in two runs with a homerun to left field to bust the tie and take a 7-5 lead over the Builders. But the Builders went on to score five more runs over their final four at-bats to take the 10-7 win.
Kellett ended the game with three hits and three RBI while Justin Bagbey was 2-5 in the win. Taylor also collected two hits in the loss.
Bryan Hill tossed the first 5.1 innings for the loss. He struck out five batters but gave up nine runs on eight hits. Two of the eight runs were unearned. Ryan Bradshaw pitched the final 3.2 innings and gave up four hits and one run.
The Hawks will travel to the Apprentice School on April 23rd in their next outing.
