Box Score MURFREESBORO - It took 11 innings but the Hawks pulled out a 19-18 win over Millersville University this afternoon to take one out of four games in the series played over the weekend. The win moves Chowan to 9-6 on the year. Jake Badinelli's single to right field in the bottom of the 11th inning scored Adam Capps to take the win.
The Hawks found themselves trailing 10-1 heading into the fifth inning but used a five-run fifth inning at-bat to get back into the game at 10-6. Millersville added four runs in their next at-bat to jump back on top of the Hawks 14-6 before the Hawks exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. Chowan pounded out eight hits in their 7th inning at-bat highlighted by a Matt Crane two-rbi single and a Justin Bagbey double that drove in two of the Hawks eight runs. The Hawks got down 17-14 with one at-bat left in the bottom of the ninth. The Hawks loaded the bases for Mike Taylor who grounded out but scored a run. Pinch hitting, Matt Price drove in a run to cut the lead to 17-16. Evan Price scored on an error by Millersville to knot the game at 17-17 and force extra innings. Millersville's Cody Wile led the 10th inning off with a solo homerun to take an 18-17 lead but the Hawks continued to do battle. Jordan Whitlatch led off the bottom of the tenth inning with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt by Crane, John Kellett drove in Whitlatch from second base on a double down the right field line. Whitlatch's score evened the game at 18-18. John Morris pitched out of the 11th inning to keep the game tied at 18-18 in the bottom of the 11th. Capps led the inning off with a double to right center and then advanced on an error on an attempted pick off play. With the game-winning runner at third base and no outs, Jake Badinelli came through with a single down the right field line to score Capps and take the 19-18 win.
Morris picked up the win on the mound for Chowan after throwing the final two innings. He gave up two hits and one run and struck out two batters. Morris moves to 2-0 after today's win. Chowan pounded out 25 hits in the game. Bagbey was perfect at the plate going 4-4 with five RBI's on the day. Kellett was 5-7 at the plate with five runs scored and one RBI while Crane ended up 4-6 with three RBI and three runs scored.
The Hawks will hit the road for the first time this season this week when they travel to USC-Aiken for a two-game series starting Tuesday.
