NEWBERRY, SC - The softball team snapped a 14 game Newberry softball winning streak after splitting a double header with the Indians this afternoon. Mindy Byrd's (at left) three-run homer in the 5th inning propelled her team to a 3-2 win in the first game while two late inning runs for Newberry got them the night cap win, 3-1. Today's doubleheader split moves the Hawks to 13-7 on the season.
The Hawks got all their runs with one swing of the bat on Byrd's three-run homer in the top of the 5th inning. Kaytee McLaughlin led the inning off with a double down the left field line. Two batters later Allie Hunka reached base on a catcher's interference call. Bryd's homerun scored all three Chowan runs and gave Shellie Wimpey all the run support she would need on the mound. The senior picked up her 6th win of the year after tossing a five-hitter, giving up two early runs, and striking out four Newberry batters.
Newberry busted a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 6th inning with two runs to take a 3-1 lead and eventual win in the second game. Chowan's Tricia Gorman doubled in the Hawks only score in the 5th inning. Allie Kolezynski scattered six hits on the mound while also striking out five batters. She finished up 1-3 at the plate with a run scored.
The Hawks will host CIAA opponent Shaw University on March 12th in their next outing. Game time is 2:00pm at Hawks Field.
