Box Score 2 Box Scores vs. UNC-Pembroke
MURFREESBORO - The softball team split a doubleheader wtih UNC-Pembroke this afternoon winning game one with a 5-3 final but dropping game two 9-2. Today's split moves the Hawks to 23-15 on the season. Shellie Wimpey (at left) picked up ther 12th win on the mound with today's first game win.
The Hawks used a five-run fifth inning to win the first game. After getting down 2-0, the Hawks exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by rbi singles by Alex Allen and Brooke Owen. Shellie Wimpey and the Hawks defense went to work to hold the Braves off in their final two at-bats to take the 5-3 win. Wimpey (12-7) picked up the win after throwing a complete game, giving up seven hits and striking out two batters. Owen ended the first game 1-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored while Allen was 1-3 with an RBI.
The Hawks were held to five hits in the nightcap loss while UNC-Pembroke tallied 12 hits. The Braves scored six runs in their first two at-bats to help get out in front of the Hawks. Chowan finally got on the board in the 6th inning after Melissa Woodrum drove in Allie Kolezynski from third base on a short single to right field. The Hawks scored one final run in the bottom of the 7th inning but all comeback attempts were cut short by UNC-P's pitching. Kolezynski picked up the loss on the mound for Chowan and moves to 11-8 overall. The freshman gave up nine runs, four of which were earned, and struck out two batters in the game.
The Hawks will hit the field again on Sunday as they travel to Mount Olive College for a 1:00pm match up.
