MURFREESBORO- The men's tennis team dropped to 2-8 on the season after falling short to Virginia State University by the final match score, 5-4. Three of the four match points were won during singles play.
Chowan trailed 2-1 after doubles play but rallied back in singles play. Darick Gilman represented the #1 seed for the Hawks, but dropped his match, 6-4, 6-2, to John Lanier. Raitis Abolins played as the #2 seed to defeat Robert Dunham in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Jonathan Walker anchored the #3 seed followed by Mike Fencil, Adam Moneypenny, and Ira Coats as the #4, #5, and #6 seeds, respectively. Walker battled but fell short in the three-set match against Javan Gardinier by the final score, 7-6(7-4), 4-6, 1-3. Fencil and Moneypenny picked up wins in their singles matches. Fencil won his match in three sets by the final score, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. Moneypenny picked up a win over Amir Jones, 7-6(7-0), 6-4. Coats dropped the match to Dewayne Dixon by the final score, 7-5, 6-2.
The Hawks will begin a three-match road trip starting next Saturday, April 4th with the first stop at Virginia Union University. That match will start at 1:00pm.
