Box Score 2 Box Scores vs. Barton
WILSON, NC - The softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Barton College this afternoon, edging the Bulldogs 6-5 (9) and 2-1. Today's wins move the Hawks to 20-14 on the year. Chowan used solid pitching performances and some key hits down the stretch to help propel them to the twinbill sweep.
Brooke Owen scored on an infield error to get up on the Bulldogs 6-5 in the top of the 9th inning. Shellie Wimpey and the Hawks' defense ended the game with by throwing the tying run out at home in the bottom of the 9th to take the marathon game. Wimpey went the distance in the game and improved 10-7 overall on the mound. She struck out seven batters and scattered nine hits in the duel. Allie Kolezynski tallied three hits for the Hawks, including putting the ball into play in the top of the 9th inning that eventually score Owen to win the game. Owen along with teammates Kaytee McLaughlin, Jenna Lassiter, and Alex Allen had two hits in the win.
Mindy Byrd busted open a 1-1 tie in the 6th inning when she singled in Brenna Thomas who pinch ran for Melissa Woodrum. Woodrum opened the inning up with a single and McLaughlin laid down a bunt to move Thomas to second. Thomas stole third, putting herself in postion to score when Byrd singled in the go-ahead run.
Kolezynski and the Hawks' defense went to work the next two at-bats against Barton, shutting them down for the 2-1 win. Kolezynski was 3-3 at the plate while Allen and Byrd had a hit and an RBI. Kolezynski moves to 10-7 on the mound after the win. She held the Bulldogs to two hits while also picking up two strikeouts.
The Hawks hit the 20 win mark with tonight's wins over Barton College. They will host Elizabeth City State University Thursday afternoon at 2:00pm in a doubleheader.
