Solid Pitching Lifts Hawks over Southern Virginia

MURFREESBORO - The Hawks improved to 11-10 overall after a doubleheader sweep of Southern Virginia University this afternoon. Chowan won with game scores of 3-2 and 4-0 behind the solid pitching of senior Bryan Hill and freshman Ryan Bradshaw. Jordan Whitlatch (at left) picked up the game-winning hit in the 3-2 win while Bradshaw pitched a complete game, shut out in game two.
The Hawks held on to a 3-2 lead to take the first game and even their overall record at 10-10. Bryan Hill pitched the win, his third of the season. He gave up six hits and struck out four batters in six innings of work while John Morris came in to throw the last inning to pick up his first save of the season. The Knights got on the board first in the game when Jake Johnson scored on an infield error by the Hawks. Chowan rebounded with a two-run bottom of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Justin Bagbey scored John Kellett who walked and then stole second base to knot the game at 1-1. Zac Caito drove in Bagbey from third with a sacrifice fly to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Southern Virginia tied the game at 2-2 in their next at-bat when Andy Lewis scored on a squeeze bunt by Rick Jensen. 
Thomas Bird led the bottom of the 6th inning off with a single to left field to get the momentum going for the Hawks. Evan Price, pinch running for Bird, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lee Dickens andlater scored on a Jordan Whitlatch double down the right field line.  Morris came in to protect the 3-2 lead and pitched out of a bases loaded situation to pick up the save.
Whitlatch was the only Hawk to get multiple hits after going 2-4 at the plate with the game-winning RBI.
Ryan Bradshaw pitched a complete game, shut out in the nightcap for his second win of the season. Bradshaw gave up just four hits and struck out six Knight batters in the win. Chowan exploded for a four-run third inning to help propel them to the win. Kellett was 3-3 with a run scored in the win while Matt Crane was 2-3 at the plate. Bagbey had an RBI and a run scored on one hit.
The Hawks (11-10) will host Virginia State University tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader. Southern Virginia falls to 13-10 after today's games.
