Program Wins First-Ever Game Over Nationally Ranked Opponent

MURFREESBORO - The women's basketball team experienced a program-first this afternoon as they toppled their first-ever nationally ranked opponent in the University of the District of Columbia. The Hawks rolled to the 70-52 win, giving the Firebirds just their third loss of the season. UDC came into the game ranked #18 in the most recent DII national polls. Aiding in the descisive win was how the Hawks spread the scoring among 11 players while also forcing 23 Firebird turnovers.

The first half was tightly played by both teams as the they exchanged baskets for nearly 20 minutes of play. With a slim two point lead, the Hawks score six unanswered points over the final 1:30 of play to take a 31-23 lead into halftime.

Alicia McMorris nailed a three-pointer with just over 14:00 to play in the second half to give the Hawks a 38-35 lead, a lead that they would build on for the remainder of play. They eventually rolled to a 70-52 win. Chowan shot 43% (24-56) from the floor while also getting 11 players in the scoring column. AJ O'Banion led the way for Chowan with 15 points off the bench. She also tallied two steals, two assists, and four rebounds. Joining O'Banion in double figures was Brittany Nicholson who also came off the bench. She had 12 points, four steals, and was nearly perfect at 5-6 from the floor. Taylor Hughes pulled down seven boards, five of which were offensive, while also putting up eight points. Najah Harris had six points to go with six assists while McMorris finished with eight points and five assists.

For #18 UDC, Lillian McGill had a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds while Deyshia Williams totaled 13 points. The Hawks improve to 9-15 overall while #18 UDC moves to 19-3.

The Hawks have just two game remaining on their schedule. They will hit the court again on Wednesday, February 11th as they host the Apprentice School at 6:00pm.
