Box Scores vs. LMC

MURFREESBORO - The softball team opened their 2009 season with a doubleheader sweep of Lees-McRae College. The Hawks beat the Bobcats with final game scores of 3-0 and 3-2. Lees McRae came into the game 2-0 after beating Meredith College in a doubleheader Friday afternoon, but leave today with two losses at the hands of the Hawks.

Shellie Wimpey tossed a shut out in game one for her first win of her senior season. Wimpey picked up run support in the second inning when Allie Hunka drove in two runs on a triple to right field. Hunka scored later in the inning on a throwing error by the Bobcats to give Chowan all the run support they would need to take the game. Wimpey ended the game with five strikeouts and scattering six hits. Brooke Owen started

Brenna Thomas scored in the bottom of the 6th inning to bust a 2-2 tie. Hunka drove the ball to the right side of the infield giving Thomas enough time to cross the plate before Hunka was thrown out at first. Allie Kolezynski pitched the first win of her collegiate career, giving up two runs, one of which was earned.

The Hawks (2-0) will travel to play Pfeiffer University tomorrow in a 2:00pm doubleheader. Chowan will return home on February 18th when they host Mount Olive College in a 2:00pm doubleheader.
