Hawks Hold On to Win Shipbuilders Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Chowan holds on to win the Shipbuilders Classic after a late rally to defeat Southern Virginia University with a final score of 87-82. Today's win gives the Hawks their 17th of the season.

After trailing 44-38 at the half, the Hawks fought their way back into the game. Chowan took a 66-65 lead after Jaleel Nelson's steal and lay-in with under 12:00 minutes to go in the game. After Zach Hicks' lay-up, the Knights responded back with a three-pointer by Bryce Pendleton to even the score at 68. Trailing late in the game, Senior Guard Chris Kenon hit a three to bring the game back even at 78 with under 2:30 minutes remaining. The Hawks trailed again under 1:30 to go until Kenon nailed a clutch three-pointer to go ahead 83-82. Once Chowan took the lead, there was no looking back. Kenon and fellow Senior Guard Aaron Scott put the game away hitting clutch free-throws down the stretch.

The Hawks finished the game shooting 57% from the field.They also forced 21 Southern Virginia turnovers and scoried 21 points off of those turnovers alone.

Chowan had four players in double-figures led by Scott and Nelson. Nelson scored a team-high 22 points on 8-12 shooting. Scott finished with 21 points, 13 coming in the first-half. Mark Brown added 15 points in the win while Kenon scored 11 points and had a team-high 5 assists.
