RALEIGH, NC- The Hawks cruised to a victory in the first game (6-1), but withstood a late-inning rally by the Angels to complete the sweep (5-3). Chowan improves to 12-4 on the season; the Hawks have won five in a row and are 7-1 over the past week.
Chowan jumped to an early lead into the top of the second inning. Kaytee McLaughlin led the inning off with a walk, followed by an error by the catcher. Then, Mindy Byrd walked and stole second base. With runners on second and third, Allie Hunka singled with a bunt to bring in McLaughlin. The Hawks added two more runs in the inning to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Chowan scored three more runs in the 5th and 6th innings combined to put the game out of reach. The Angels scored in their last at-bat. Senior Shellie Wimpey earned her fifth win on the season. Wimpey pitched a complete game while allowing only one run on nine hits.
The Hawks trailed going into the top of the third inning (1-0) until with bases loaded Freshman Alex Allen singled to centerfield to bring home Brooke Owen; followed by an error by the catcher to bring home Allie Kolezynski to take the lead (2-1). Chowan scored three runs in the fifth inning to go ahead, 5-1. The Angels rallied in the bottom of the seventh led by Olivia Izze two-out, two-RBI double to cut the Hawks lead to two (5-3). Kolezynski forced Arielle Stout to ground out to shortstop to end the game.
Sophomore Tricia Gorman went 1-3 along with two RBIs. Pitcher/DH Allie Kolezynski batted 2-3 with one RBI. Plus, Kolezynski pitched a complete game allowing three runs on seven hits; in addtion, striking out seven angels.
The Hawks improve to 12-4 on the year whereas the Angels fall to 3-5 on the season. Chowan will play their make-up game against Mount Olive College this Thursday at 2:00pm. The Angels will travel to Sweetbriar this weekend.
