Baseball Hangs on to Beat Fairmont

MURFREESBORO - The Hawks held on to beat Fairmont State University 17-14 in a game that featured 30 hits, 31 runs, and 11 errors. The slugfest also saw four lead changes but in the end the Hawks held off the Falcons for their 8th win of the season.

The Hawks got on the board first in their first at-bat when Matt Crane scored on a infield ball by Justin Bagbey. Fairmont State added two runs of the own to taje a 2-1 lead in the top of the 3rd inning. The Hawks exploded for 10 runs in the 5th inning, an inning that was highlighted by six hits. With a 11-3 lead, the Hawks gave up nine runs over the next two innings, putting the game at a 12-12 tie. The Hawks scored five runs on three hits to take a 17-12 lead. The Falcons added two more runs but freshman pitcher Will Medlin shut down the Falcons over their last two at-bats to help lift his team to the 17-14 win.

Bryan Hill got a no decision on the mound after throwing the first five innings. Hill scattered seven hits and gave up three runs, two of which were earned. John Atkins came in for relief of Hill in the 6th inning but gave up six runs on six hits. Austin Eubanks and John Morris helped get the Hawks out of the 6th inning. Morris ended up with the win after throwing two outs in the 6th inning. Medlin tossed the final two innings, holding the Falcons to one hit in 10 at-bats.

Bagbey ended the day 3-4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored whiel Mike Taylor collected two hits and had two runs batted in. Matt Price and Jordan Whitlatch each tallied two hits in the win.

Chowan improves to 8-3 on the year after going 2-1 in the three-game series with the Falcons. The Hawks will host Indiana University of Pennsylvania next weekend in a four-game series through Saturday and Sunday.
