Hawks Made Good on Three Game Series Sweep of Ohio Valley

MURFREESBORO - The baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Ohio Valley University with an 11-4 win. Bryan Hill threw eight of nine innings on the mound for his second win of the 2009 season. Hill held the Scots to nine hits while his teammates collected 17 hits to help solidify their sixth straight win.

The first two innings of the game were scoreless but the Hawks used a four-run fourth inning to bust open the pitcher's dual. Nate Stanton led the inning off with a single to left field. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Jake Badinelli laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a fielding error, which also scored Stanton from second base. Mike Taylor connected for a two-run single three batters later to give Chowan a 3-0 lead. Taylor later scored on a fielding error for a 4-0 lead.

Chowan exploded for four more runs in their next at-bat for an 8-0 lead over the Scots. Taylor doubled to right center to score two runs while Jordan Whitlatch and Justin Bagbey drove in runs with singles.

Hill cruised through his first six innings on the mound, striking out five batters and scattering five hits. He ran into a bases loaded jam in the 7th inning with no outs but pitched out, giving up just one run. The Scots added another run in their next bat-bat to cut the lead to 8-2.

Zack Caito cleared the bases with a triple to right center field to give the Hawks an 11-4 lead in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Hill picked up his second win of the season in the 11-3 win. He tossed eight innings, giving up nine hits and two runs, one of which was earned. He struck out six Scot batters in the win. John Atkins came on to throw the last inning of the game.

Taylor paced Chowan offensively after going 3-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. He tallied two doubles on the day. Jordan Whitlatch was 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Justin Bagbey, John Kellett, and Nate Stanton all finished up with two hits each.
