MURFREESBORO - The Hawks suffered back to back losses in their 2009 debut as they fell 10-1 and 13-6 to Coker College this afternoon. The Cobras collected 32 hits to help propel them to the double header sweep of the Hawks, spoiling their 2009 season debut.
Coker's pitching staff combined efforts to hold Chowan to 18 hits over fourteen innings of play. In the first game of the doubleheader, Coker used a seven-run third inning to take an 8-0 lead over the Hawks. The Cobras added two runs in their last at-bat to get on top of the Hawks 10-0 with one at-bat left for Chowan. The Hawks finally got on the board when John Kellett drove in Adam Capps who reached base on a single to left center field. The third inning offensive stance by Coker was too much for the Hawks to overcome as they fell with a 10-1 final score.
Chris Nelson picked up the loss on the mound after throwing 2.2 innings. Nelson gave up eight hits and six earned runs in 18 batters faced. Jordan Whitlatch and Mike Taylor each had two hits in the loss.
The Hawks took an early 3-0 lead in the night cap with two runs in their first at-bat. They added another in the second inning but Coker jumped back on top with a five-run 3rd inning. The Cobras went on to add eight runs over their next three at-bats to keep Chowan at bay. They went on to beat the Hawks 13-6. Bryan Hill pitched the loss, going 3.2 innings. The senior struck out three batters and gave up five earned runs.
Chowan tallied 11 hits in game two. Justin Bagbey was 3-4 with a run scored while Matt Price was 2-4 with two runs knocked in.
