WASHINGTON, DC - One day after trouncing Columbia Union College at the UDC Independent Classic, the women's basketball team dropped a tough game to host-team University of the District of Columbia. The Firebirds topped the Hawks 64-52 to give the Hawks their tenth loss of the season.
The Hawks and the Firebirds battled in the first half with the Firebirds taking a narrow 33-32 lead into halftime. Chowan trailed most of the second half but mounted a comeback in the waning minutes of the game. The Hawks suffered a key turnover trailing by seven points with just under two minutes go and were forced to foul. UDC would go on to win 64-52 to go undefeated in their own tournament.
Three Hawks scored in double figures with Najah Harris and AJ O'Banion each getting 11 points. Brittany Nicholson chipped in 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals in the loss. Freshman Maddie Cummings scored nine points off the bench for Chowan.
Both O'Banion and Harris were named to the UDC Independent Classic All Tournament Team for their performances over the two games.
Chowan will travel to Elizabeth City State University in their next match up on January 8th. Tip off for that game is slated for 6:00pm. The Hawks will return to the Helms Center on Saturday, January 10th as they host North Greenville University at 2:00pm.
