MURFREESBORO - The Hawks picked up their 10th win of the season after knocking off CIAA powerhouse Elizabeth City State Unviersity 82-76 in court action tonight. The Hawks, who fell to the Vikings earlier in the season, came out on fire, hitting 55% from the floor while also putting four players in the double-figure scoring column.
The Hawks controlled the game from the opening tip, forcing the Vikings to play catch up for most of the first half. Chowan went on a 9-2 run around the seven minute mark of the first period to get up by as many as 11 points over the Vikings. At the 1:57 mark of the first period, Aaron Scott hit a pair of free throws and then converted a ECSU turnover into a three pointer to extend the Hawks lead to 34-22 heading into halftime.
With a 12 point lead over one of the top team's in the CIAA, the Hawks played steady through out the second half to hold off any late surges by the Vikings. Chowan rolled to the win with four players notching double digits. Scott led the attack with 21 points on a 6-11 shooting performance, including draining 3-6 from beyond the three point arch. Charles Rhodes came in tonight with 17 points, three assists, and four steals. Jaleel Nelson was near perfect from the perimeter after hitting 7-8 from the floor and 2-3 from three point land. Nelson tallied four steals and three assists in the win. Nate Walchuk added 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists to join his teammates in double figures.
Chowan hit 31-56 for 55% on the night, including draining 11-24 three pointers. The Vikings, now 12-3 overall, hit 39% (24-61) from the floor and were paced by the CIAA's leading scorer in Anthony Hilliard. He had a double-double with 23 points and 14 boards. DeJaun Morrison had 17 points for the Vikings.
