DURHAM, NC - The men's basketball dropped their opening game of the NC Central-BC Powder Classic on Friday evening to CIAA member Saint Augustine's College. The Falcons held off the Hawks with a final score of 63-54 as the Hawks were only able to connect on 33% from the floor, after heading into the match up hitting nearly 50% of shots taken.
Jaleel Nelson landed his first season double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds but it wasn't enough to help lift his team to a victory. Nelson gave the Hawks an early lead after the opening tip when he nailed a three pointer on the Hawks' second possession. The Falcons took control midway of the first period, getting up by nine points with just over 7:00 to play. Chowan went on an 8-0 run over the next six minutes to cut the Falcon's lead to just one point. Back to back conversions by St. Augustine's put the Hawks down five at the half, 32-27.
After trailing by as many as 13 points in the second half, Mark Brown helped to cut the Falcon lead to five when he hit a shot from the outside at the 5:20 mark of the second period. But the Falcons held off any late comebacks by the Hawks as they went on to win 63-54.
Brown scored 13 points in the loss while Aaron Scott came off the bench to net 11 points. The Hawks, now 8-7 on the year, will play host-team NC Central at 7:30pm Saturday. Listen to the game live by logging on to the athletics website and finding the listen now button.
