PETERSBURG, VA - Saint Pauls used two big rushing plays to edge the Hawks this afternoon with a final score of 13-0. Jermaine Williams skirted Chowan's defense and ran 62 yards for Saint Pauls at the 4:57 mark of the first quarter and later Todd Shelton rushed one in from 49 yards out to help his team beat the visiting Hawks.
Chowan was able to garner just 155 yards of offense in the sloppy playing conditions leftover from Tropical Storm Hanna. However, the Hawk defense held Saint Pauls to under 200 yards off offense, with just over half of their offense coming off those two big rushing plays.
Chowan put together one sustained drive just prior to halftime, eating up the clock with 14 plays. They drove 56 yards to Saint Pauls 25 yard line but failed to convert on a fourth down and turned the ball over with just over a minute to go in the half. That bad luck continued to plague Chowan as they struggled to move the ball into SPC's territory for the entire second half.
Offensively Chowan picked up 12 first downs and held SPC to 10. They rushed for 112 yards on the ground and passed for 43 yards. SPC totaled 197 yards of offense with 137 of those yards on the ground and 60 yards through the air.
CJ Westler rushed 11 times for 40 yards and passed for 23 yards on five completions and one interception. Tight end Tim Watson caught three passes for 18 yards to lead the team.
Defensively senior defensive end Quentin Ladson tallied a team high nine tackles with five tackles for a loss and two sacks. Jeremy Bednarz-Gray came in with six tackles, one of those for a loss five yards.
The Hawks will host Brevard College in their home season debut next Saturday. Kick off is slated for 12:00pm. Saint Pauls will travel to Webber International in a non-conference match up. Chowan falls to 0-2 on the year while Saint Pauls runs their overall record to 1-1.
