Hawks Battle but Virginia Union Pulls Away in the End

MURFREESBORO - The Hawks scored 21 second half points to pull within two points of Virginia Union but the Panthers scored three touchdowns in the final four minutes of the game to ice the win at 51-28.Chowan managed to grind out 287 yards of offense against the #1 defense in the CIAA in the game. Virginia Union gained most of their 471 offensive yards on the ground with 324 on the night.

The only score of the first quarter came on a safety when Chowan's center snapped the ball out of the back of the end zone at the 5:58 mark of the game. The Panthers scored on a Chowan turnover when Hurley Hemphill picked up a loose ball and ran 44 yards for a touchdown and a 9-0 lead over the Hawks. Chowan countered that score when JJ Spates hit paydirt, capping off a three-play, 44 yard drive. Cory Cline split the uprights to make the game 9-7. The Panthers scored on their ensuing possession when Patrick Mills ran the ball in from 12 yards out to give them a 16-7 lead at the half.

After getting down 30-14, the Hawks battled back to pull with two points with 10:52 to go in the game. CJ Westler connected with Victor Davis for 19 yards with Cline getting the PAT to make the game 30-28. VUU scored three touchdowns over the final four minutes to help put the game out of reach for the Hawks, giving them their second CIAA leage victory.

For Chowan Westler was 21 of 47 passing with 271 yards and three touchdown tosses while his counterpart Lamar Little completed four passes on 14 attempts for 147 yards. VUU had two players run for over 100 yards with Tarian Donaldson getting 177 yards on 23 carries and Patrick Mills tallying 115 yards on 13 plays.

Freshman Brendon Scott led all tacklers with 11 on the night while Jeremy Bednarz-Gray had seven. For VUU Hemphill had seven tackles.

The Hawks now 1-4 and 0-2 in the CIAA will head to Fayetteville State on Saturday, October 4th for a 4:00pm match up with the Broncos.
